WTF? Microsoft adCenter and Yahoo! Search Marketing

Filed under: Marketing, SEO, Online, Keywords — Jeff

Seriously WTF were these two companies thinking. Their interface and experience for managing a PPC campaign is downright un-user friendly. Really makes you wonder why Google is #1, they simply “get it”.

My top 5 WTF were you thinking list for each company.

Microsoft adCenter:

1. Is this run off of MySpace servers because it is the slowest thing I have ever dealt with.
2. Reporting is something straight out of the Fisher Price factory.
3. Up until a few weeks ago I HAD to use InternetExploder
4. Adding keywords is the most painful process ever, having to delete “duplicate” keywords should be automatic.
5. You send the least amount of traffic with the same keywords but still say “MSN reaches nearly 2 out of 3 web users”

Yahoo! Search Marketing:

1. If you don’t change your minimum bid and your ad needs to be approved, and it gets approved you pay the highest PPC and they don’t email you to let you know they have approved it.
2. Glad it takes 3 days to get ads approved.
3. Your duplicate ad filter is rediculous
4. User interface = crap
5. I love the amount of spam sites my ads do show up on.

AdWords landing page quality update - I got owned

Filed under: Marketing, Revenue, Online, AdSense, Keywords — Jeff

We all knew it was coming, I did myself. Hell, even I hated it when when I clicked on an Ad and all I got was a page of crap text or a free article riddled with AdSense all over it. MFA is what its called (Made for AdSense) and it is junk, but it makes money for some people. The thing is, I wasn’t doing that. I was offering a free service, and because the AdSense Ads that showed up on my site was for a paid version of what I was offering for free, I got owned, complete junk.

The article here states that “a small number of advertisers who are providing a low quality user experience on their landing pages will see increases in their minimum bids” I was spending under $10/day for AdWords on this site, I’d hate to see what happened to some of the bigger players. I wasn’t giving a low quality user experience, the words I was bidding on was for the service I offered.

What did Google do?

Out of 1,000 or so keywords I was paying under .10 cents per click for the past 6 months got halted. As of yesterday 750 of them got raised up to .30-.40 cents per click and some as high as $5.00 per click.

Well I was sitting on easy street for a bit with this small project, its time to diversify with MAC and YSM.

Lets see what kind of profit I can make now.

Google AdWords adds delivery options

Filed under: Blogging, Marketing, SEO, Online, Keywords — Jeff

Google AdWords has added 2 options for delivering your AdWords, Standard and Accelerated delivery.

Direct from Google’s website here are the details:

Standard delivery

This option is automatically selected for you, and is best if you want your ads to reach a wide range of users over the course of the day. We’ll spread your ad impressions across the day to make sure you don’t accrue all of your clicks early on. However, if your budget is set below the system-recommended budget, your ads may not receive all possible impressions.

For example, if you want to spend US$30.00 over 30 days, your daily budget would be US$1.00. With standard delivery, your ads would appear throughout the day, from 12:00 a.m. to 11:59 p.m.. If your system-recommended daily budget is US$3.00, you may receive only one third of all impressions possible during that time.

Accelerated delivery

This option is best if you want to increase the likelihood of spending your full budget each day. We’ll display your ads as often as possible until your budget is reached. If your budget is set below the system-recommended budget, your ads may not receive all possible impressions.

For example, you might choose to spend US$30.00 over the next 30 days, with a daily budget of US$1.00. If your system-recommended daily budget is US$3.00, you may receive all possible impressions until your budget is reached. Therefore, you could spend your entire budget between 12:00 a.m. and 8:00 a.m.. In this case, your ads wouldn’t appear again until 12:00 a.m. the next day.

Its been a little while since I checked out the Adsense layouts and it looks like they added two new image ad sizes for your website.

The 336×280 and 250×250 image ads look very good and I just implemented them into a new site of mine.

Back to basics H1 tags and Page Titles

Filed under: Blogging, SEO — Jeff

Some of the most important aspects of SEO are often over looked and skipped over. I spend quite a bit of time surfing the internet and browsing websites and more often than not I am seeing many websites not utilizing proper H1 Tags or Page Titles.

These two simple items make a large impact on your website and rankings with the big 3 search engines. Here are a couple tips to optimize your H1 tags and Page Titles:

H1 Tags:

2 or 3 of your most desired keywords placed on the top of your page. They don’t have to be giant sized you can edit them with some simple CSS.

Page Titles:

Keyword targeted and different (not exactly the same) from your H1 Tags.

Avoid using unrelated words, keep them strictly keyword orientated.
